A story bigger than one sound
Houston belongs in the conversation about R&B.
The city’s musical history includes blues, gospel, rhythm and blues, and soul. Duke and Peacock Records helped connect those traditions to a wider recording audience after World War II, as documented by the Texas State Historical Association.

A Houston label takes shape.
Don Robey founded Peacock Records in 1949, naming it after his Bronze Peacock nightclub in Houston’s Fifth Ward. Its artists included Clarence “Gatemouth” Brown and Willie Mae “Big Mama” Thornton.
The label is an important starting point for understanding the city’s recording history.
Blues, gospel, and soul intersect.
Robey gained full control of Duke Records in 1953. Bobby “Blue” Bland, Junior Parker, and Johnny Ace were among its artists. Bland’s recordings combined expressive, gospel-influenced vocals with prominent brass arrangements.
Manager Evelyn Johnson also played a significant role in the labels and related businesses.
A Houston group reaches new listeners.
Destiny’s Child’s debut single “No, No, No” arrived in 1997, followed by the Houston group’s self-titled debut album in February 1998. The Recording Academy’s retrospective places that debut at the beginning of the group’s wider R&B story.
Their rise offers another entry point into Houston’s place in popular music.
